New business unit E-Mobility established.

4. September 2018

Neu-Ulm, August 23, 2018: Everyone is talking about the transition from combustion engines to electric motors. In the course of this far-reaching change, there is no question that the production of electric vehicles will increase significantly in the coming years - even if it will probably still take some time before the means of transportation can be found on the roads everywhere. This forward-looking drive technology uses special high-voltage cables with special connector systems that require complex assembly. At present, the cables are still mainly processed manually. In a few years' time, it will no longer be possible to meet the market's demand in this way.

The company Metzner Maschinenbau, based in Neu-Ulm, Germany, recognized this years ago. Since 2013, it has been doing pioneering work in the development of new processes with which the automatic processing of high-voltage cables, including plug assembly, can be carried out safely. Metzner already offers tried and tested solutions for around half of all work steps which are necessary in the process chain of this cable processing. The validation by numerous well-known manufacturers of connector systems, assembly companies and automobile manufacturers as well as granted patents underline the company's culture of innovation and competence.

Metzner Maschinenbau is convinced that it will also be necessary in the future for cost and quality reasons to produce the special cable harnesses used for electric vehicles automatically. In order to meet these requirements even better, the company has decided to bundle its activities in the field of high-voltage cable processing and to establish the new e-mobility business field. Up to now, both semi-automatic machines and solutions with a higher degree of automation have been part of Metzner Maschinenbau's portfolio. According to Managing Director Gerhard Rauch, fully automatic transfer lines have been developed especially for the production of high volumes, enabling cycle times of ten to twelve seconds per cable side. "We are working flat out to soon be able to cover the entire process chain from cutting the cables to length to complete connector assembly and to offer our customers a wide range of automation levels in processing".
